Outside the city of New London is a vast winter wilderness waiting to be explored by scouts. People are dying, starving, and generally not doing well in this new world. The city of New London always feels like it could collapse at any time, and it often does. While moral decisions can be made, there is a sense of disconnection with citizens and this is in part because they never seem particularly happy with a decision. If you want to be a bully you can be, send the kids to these coal mines and see what happens, or put your community on the path of faith to give them more hope. New laws can be enacted which will have positive or negative connotations on the counters of hope and discontent in the community. In addition to researching new technologies, there are moral decisions to be made that determine what type of city leader you want to be. Citizens will continually bemoan this, that and the next thing which can be frustrating no matter what you provide them. Having so many researchers in the on-the-job workshops certainly speeds up research, which should always be kept in mind. There are, however, constantly changing needs over the days and there is no easy choice when it comes to deciding what to look for next. It is the tech tree that is integral to maintaining the joy and hope of citizens. Resources are crucial in keeping the city and the people alive and this involves the collection of charcoal, wood and steel. A misstep in the wrong direction can come back to haunt you later. It’s the time factor that keeps you from rushing through this and the next, and even though there is an option to speed up time, I soon found out that it wasn’t always the best thing to do because it there is so much to watch out for. The clock is literally ticking in Frostpunk, time is running out as the temperature cools and people’s needs change. It all sounds simple enough, but Frostpunk can sound brutal. Survivors need food, health care, shelter, resources and most of all hope. Once this is established early on, the game becomes a continuous race against time. Why they would head north is a bit confusing, surely it’s colder in the north? This is when the action of the game begins.Įverything in Frostpunk is affected by the weather, so the main goal is to keep the townspeople alive with the heat. Deciding that it’s not a good idea to stay in London, the city’s survivors head north to establish New London. The game follows the story of the people of London as they leave the city after catastrophic climate change, an ice age that devastates everyone. This is not your usual city builder, it is not about building luxury housing or beautifying streets dotted with parks and libraries, it is about the survival of mankind and deciding what kind of leader you want to be. 11-Bit Studios is back with a new game and it’s Frostpunk, a game that can best be described as a survival city builder management simulation.
